Critical Care
Training at Mattel Children’s Hospital:
Our fellowship program began in 1986. We are an ACGME-accredited Pediatric Critical Care training program that offers an outstanding learning opportunity for fellows. Our status as a highly specialized Children’s Hospital grants us a patient population rich in diversity and complexity. During our three-year fellowship, one will learn the elements of critical care physiology and its application throughout a wide range of clinical scenarios. Our fellowship experience encompasses a broad spectrum of pathology, and management of specific issues at all phases of illness and recovery. In addition to cardiovascular and respiratory failure, trainees will encounter and learn to manage neuro-trauma, solid organ transplantation, multi-organ system disease, and cyanotic congenital heart disease.
We strive to teach our fellows the critical thinking necessary for rapid evaluation and management of the acutely ill child. Our fellows will also develop competence in airway management and sedation skills, techniques of vascular access, and familiarity with all types of invasive monitoring.
Other rotations for fellows in addition to PICU and CT-ICU (required or elective) include Anesthesiology, Neurointensive care, and Adult Medical Intensive Care. Our fellows are encouraged to explore other avenues of research and education from the multitude of opportunities within the university.
There is an extensive didactic component of our fellowship training as well. We hold several regular conferences including clinical case conference, formal teaching meetings, critical journal review, cardiology case conference, and research conference. Fellows regularly present cases and posters at regional meetings.
