Sherin Devaskar, M.D. is the Executive Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Physician-in-Chief of Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Children's Services.

Dr. Devaskar is a highly accomplished investigator who is world renowned for unraveling mechanisms and processes responsible for fetal and neonatal origins of chronic childhood disorders, including obesity and diabetes mellitus.  Complementing her research, she is a superb clinician and gifted teacher, having received the National Mentor award from the Society for Pediatric Research.  She is also an exceptional academic leader who has served on numerous national committees, including holding the prestigious positions of President of the American Pediatric Society and member of the National Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development.

Since arriving at UCLA in 1999, Dr. Devaskar has amply demonstrated her outstanding skills as an astute administrator.  She served as Executive Vice Chair following a tenure as Vice Chair for Research, and has served for the last twelve years as Chief of the Division of Neonatology and Developmental Biology.  As Chief of Neonatology - a division that offers highly specialized care and developmental follow-up for newborns needing intensive care - Dr. Devaskar spearheaded endeavors that led to exemplary care, expanded research, and enhanced post-graduate training.  Prior to her UCLA appointment, she was Director of Neonatology and Developmental Biology and professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh, and a senior scientist at the Magee Research Institute in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Devaskar's research focuses on the long-term outcome of premature and growth-restricted babies, the nutrition they receive while in the womb and soon after birth, and the propensity of these babies to develop adult-onset conditions, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension and Alzheimer's disease.  Her research is supported by National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants.  She is also the Principal Investigator on the two NIH-funded institution training grants (T32 and K12).  Dr. Devaskar has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.  She is a member of the National Advisory Child Health and Human Development Council, National Institutes of Health. She was the Chair of the NICHD-Maternal and Child Health Committee and member of the NIH-Human and Embryology Study Section.  She was also the President of the Mid-West Society for Pediatric Research.

In her role as Executive Chair, Dr. Devaskar oversees all aspects of the Department of Pediatrics in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and provides leadership for advancing innovative research and education programs.  As Physician-in-Chief, she leads the Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA physicians and staff in providing highest-quality, family-centered clinical care.  And serving in the newly established role of Assistant Vice Chancellor of Children's Services, she will focus on a variety of initiatives in the UCLA Health System aimed at addressing critical child health issues locally, nationally and globally.
